Deansgate looking north towards Manchester Cathedral

Manchester United’s 1999 treble-winning parade passed beneath this very bridge !”

This view is from Deansgate looking north towards Manchester Cathedral.

The top photo was very kindly provided by Aidan O'Rourke and was taken in 1999. It shows the bridge over Deansgate which connected the Renaissance Hotel on the left, and the Shambles Square Market Place office and retail complex on the right (the office building on the right hand side of the photo was called Adamson House).

The bridge was demolished later that year by Connell Brothers Ltd .

26 years on, we’re curious - how many people still remember it? If memory serves, Manchester United’s 1999 treble-winning parade passed beneath this very bridge !

The bottom photo was expertly taken earlier this week by our Graduate Planner, Anna O.. It shows the considerable change that has taken place: namely removal of the bridge and all of the Market Place complex on the right (a central part of the city centre masterplan following 15 June 1996 which included the 300,000 sqft landmark store now occupied by Harvey Nichols).

On the left - and just out of shot - is the Treehouse Hotels (the former Renaissance Hotel converted by Property Alliance Group) along with the The Pollen Club Padel Tennis.

Also visible in the background, to the right of the Cathedral, is Muse’s New Victoria development.
