Cathedral Gardens
“the Urbis Building which is home to the National Football Museum”
The top photo is from 1996 - kindly provided by Stephen Welsh of Buttress for Euan’s Rebuilding Manchester book - and looks towards what was, at the time, a surface level car park next to Manchester Victoria. Alongside this, on the right hand side, is the vacant former Thompson House office building.
The bottom photo is more recent (circa 2023) and looks towards what is now Cathedral Gardens along with the Urbis Building which is home to the National Football Museum (the converted Thompson House building - now The Printworks - just off to the right.
Getting close to 30 years on, this piece of the city centre formed part of the masterplan that won the International Design Competition following the attack on 15 June 1996.
