Jutland Street

“is this the steepest hill in Manchester city centre?”

This is a slightly different type of Manchester Flashback Friday. The choice of location is Jutland Street behind Piccadilly Station (genuine question: is this the steepest hill in Manchester city centre?)

The top photo is from 1997 looking south towards Store Street and, notably the Parcelforce building (had forgotten about the huge bridge that you would see when you came in on the train to Piccadilly - it connected to the disused London Road railway station and seemed to go on and on!)

The bottom photo is much more recent, circa 2024, and shows some of the change that has taken place over the past 27 years: Wharf Close apartments on the left, built in 2000, and the Home 2 development constructed around the same time.

The Parcelforce building is now the Square One office building, which was converted around 2006.

Finally, the site to the right is now a surface car park but permission was granted in 2005 for a 60-storey tower with 430 apartments.
