Construction of M&S building
“the biggest M&S building in the world
The top photo is from 1998 and looks towards the construction of what was at the time the biggest M&S building in the world (around 250,000 sqft). Notably the refurbishment of the Corn Exchange was also underway on the right and work was about to commence on Exchange Square (along with the relocation of the Shambles Square pubs).
The bottom photo is more recent, circa beginning of 2024, and shows the significant change that has taken place over the past 26 years. This includes No 1 Deansgate, and the Harvey Nichols store. Alongside this, Selfridges moved into the M&S store in September 2002 taking up almost half the floorspace. More recently the Exchange Square Metrolink opened in 2015.
