Derelict former Rochdale Canal warehouse, located off Tariff Street near Piccadilly.
“A personal favourite for Company Director, Euan … as six years after the top photo was taken he was living in this building”
This one really is a personal favourite for Company Director, Euan - not least of all as six years after the top photo was taken he was living in this building!
Many thanks again to Steve Welsh for kindly sharing another amazing old photo of Manchester. His photo, taken in 2000, looks towards what was at the time the derelict former Rochdale Canal warehouse, located off Tariff Street near Piccadilly.
The bottom photo was taken in February 2026 and shows the transformation since this time. From left to right:
Vantage Quay was completed in 2002, comprising 117 apartments and designed by Conran and Partners.
The former Rochdale Canal warehouse - Grade II* listed and built in 1836 - was converted into 42 apartments in 2003, with the conversion designed by Michael Hyde & Associates. It is now known as Jackson’s Warehouse.
Burlington House is an 11-storey residential scheme completed in 2019, providing 91 apartments and designed by SimpsonHaugh.
Just visible in the top right hand corner is RENAKER’s 33 storey One Port Street, providing 477 apartments, also designed by SimpsonHaugh.
The new Piccadilly Basin in front of Jackson’s Warehouse was delivered in late 2001 with the infilled arm to the old canal warehouse excavated and expanded into this rectangular basin.
