Former location of the Shambles Square

“The pubs were relocated brick by brick to Exchange Square during 1998 and 1999”

The choice of photo this week relates to the former location of the Shambles Square pubs: the Old Wellington and Sinclair’s Oyster Bar (Royal Exchange and St Ann’s Square in the background to provide context).

The top photo is taken from around 1972 and shows the raising of the pubs to fit in with the Shambles Square Market Place development. This is part of a fantastic collection of about 200 slides taken by a photographer called Margaret Newbold and available on the Chetham's Library website:

The bottom photo is from February 2024 and shows the location today. The pubs were relocated brick by brick to Exchange Square during 1998 and 1999 and their former site is now largely occupied by New Cathedral Street, which formed a central part of the city centre masterplan and rebuilding following 15 June 1996.
