Shambles Square pedestrian walkway

“a mirror, location-wise, of the one from two weeks ago.”

This Manchester Flashback Friday is effectively a mirror, location-wise, of the one from two weeks ago.

The top photo is from 1997 and shows the view from what was the Shambles Square pedestrian walkway looking towards, from left to right, the Corn Exchange; the vacant Thompson House; the Arndale Centre; and (we think) the vacant Cannon House office building.

The bottom photo is from August 2024 and shows the significant change that has taken place in this part of the city over the past 27 years. Again, from left to right, it includes the relocated Old Wellington and Sinclair’s Oyster Bar; the renovated Corn Exchange Manchester (originally re-opened in 2000 as ‘The Triangle’); The Printworks; (also opened in 2000); the extended Arndale Centre (opened in 2006); and, the pedestrianised Exchange Square (completed in 1999).

The Shambles Square complex from which Euan took the original picture in 1997 was demolished in 1999.

As per the post two weeks ago, huge thanks to David Booth of Place North West for taking the recent photo.
